Is it permissible for a wife to seek divorce for the sake of honoring her mother, knowing that she has an infant daughter and another young child, and that her husband disapproves of her frequent visits to her mother?

The mother has a great right over her daughter in terms of dutifulness and kindness towards her, especially during times of weakness and illness, as Allah Almighty says: (And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And to parents, do good.) [Quran 17:23]. Dutifulness to parents is among the best acts of drawing near to Allah, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, called it jihad. The husband has the right to obedience in what is reasonable. Therefore, the daughter must reconcile between being dutiful to her mother and not disobeying her husband, such as convincing her husband to visit her mother at frequent intervals. If the mother is in need of care and there is a fear of her being neglected, and there is no one to look after her except the daughter, then it is not permissible to abandon her. In such a case, she may ransom herself from her husband through khul' (divorce initiated by the wife).
