What is the ruling on a Muslim attending events where alcohol is served, knowing that not attending might make him appear as an extremist?

If the occasions are not related to studying, it is not permissible to be present in a place where alcohol is consumed, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not sit at a table where alcohol is consumed." As for sitting with an academic supervisor while he is drinking alcohol to discuss study matters, one must be careful to avoid it during the time of alcohol consumption, strive to guide him to Islam, request respect for your religion and propose appointments when he is not drinking alcohol, and seek assistance through supplication to facilitate dispensing with residence in lands of disbelief.
