What is the religious ruling on slaughtering an animal when the deceased's funeral procession leaves the house, which is referred to as "وحشة للميت" (a comfort/solace for the deceased)?

Some scholars have counted the act of slaughtering an animal when a funeral procession departs from the house, claiming it as a "farewell for the deceased" (wahsha lil-mayyit), as an innovation (bid'ah). Sheikh Al-Albani explicitly stated that "slaughtering sheep at the threshold of the door when a funeral procession leaves" is an innovation. Similarly, Ibn Al-Haj, in "Al-Madkhal," warned against this innovation.

Ibn Al-Haj explained that this custom contradicts the Sunnah (definition) in several ways: Firstly: It is an act of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "(There is) no 'aqr in Islam." 'Aqr refers to slaughtering at the grave. Secondly: It involves ostentation (riya'), seeking renown (sum'ah), boastfulness (mubahaah), and pride (fakhr). The Sunnah for acts of closeness (qurbat) is to perform them secretly, not openly. Walking with slaughtered animals in front of the funeral procession combines displaying charity with ostentation. If this charity were given secretly at home, it would be a righteous deed, provided it was free from innovation (i.e., not taken as a Sunnah or custom); because it was not an act of the Salaf, and all good lies in following them.

Therefore, it is not permissible to slaughter an animal when a funeral procession departs. If it were good for the deceased or their family, the Shari'ah would have brought it. The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and there is no narration from him or any of his Companions that they did this, nor did any of the imams of Islam recommend it.
