Is it permissible for a woman who is separated from her husband, is in the process of divorce, and is residing in her family's home, to leave her family's home without her husband's permission, knowing that divorce proceedings may take years?

A woman is not permitted to leave her husband's home without his permission, except out of necessity, such as seeking her rights from a judge, or earning a livelihood if her husband is in financial hardship, or seeking a religious ruling (fatwa) if her husband is not knowledgeable in religious matters and has not sought one for her. Even if her husband divorces her with a revocable divorce, she must remain in his home until her waiting period (iddah) ends, based on the Almighty's saying: "Do not expel them from their homes, nor should they leave, unless they commit a clear immorality." If her departure is without a valid excuse, she must return. If it is due to an excuse, such as harm befalling her, then she is not required to seek permission. Divorce is detested, and one should not resort to it except after all means of reconciliation have failed.
