How does a Muslim follow the correct group or community in matters of creed, given that each claims to be in the right, and all of them are scholars whose pronouncements a questioner accepts without proof, and no proof is accepted except with their explanation, and each scholar explains the proof according to his own methodology?

Every sect claims to be upon the truth, but the truth is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions brought. This is clarified through authentic transmission and clear understanding, and it is confirmed by the hadith that mentioned the division of the Ummah into seventy-three sects, all of which will be in the Fire except one: "What I and my companions are upon." Therefore, the correct belief is what Muslims have received through authentic chains of transmission from the predecessors of the Ummah: the Companions, the Tabi'un, and the followed Imams, as Allah Almighty said: "And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct - Allah is pleased with them." Imam Abu al-Muzaffar al-Sam'ani explained that the People of Hadith are the most deserving of this title because they are the most concerned with collecting and preserving the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with authentic chains of narration, whereas the people of desires cling to opinions and rationalizations, far from hadiths and narrations. The distinguishing characteristic of the People of Sunnah is that they follow the strongest and most equitable Sunnah, while the people of desires argue with weak or Mursal narrations.
