The answer

Disciplining the self begins with one's discovery of their shortcomings. This is an individual responsibility, and one must strive for change, as Allah Almighty said: ﴿Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.﴾ And a person benefits only through self-initiative, like the wife of Pharaoh, in contrast to the wives of Noah and Lot.

Among the means of disciplining the self are: 1. Worshipping Allah, submitting to Him, taking care of obligations, and purifying the heart from attachment to other than Allah. 2. Frequent recitation and contemplation of the Quran. 3. Reading admonitory books and the biographies of the righteous predecessors. 4. Engaging with educational programs such as lessons and lectures. 5. Preserving time and occupying it with what is beneficial. 6. Not overindulging in permissible things. 7. Righteous companionship that aids in good. 8. Acting upon and applying what one learns. 9. Rigorous self-reckoning. 10. Self-confidence combined with reliance on Allah. 11. Despising the self for the sake of Allah while working. 12. Legitimate seclusion to allocate time for acts of worship and private communion.
