To what extent does illness intercede for its owner, does prayer become waived for a patient suffering from hepatic coma, and is one who dies from ascites considered among those protected from the trial of the grave?

The deceased, due to the aforementioned illness, is considered among the martyrs of the Afterlife, and great reward and salvation from the torment of the grave are hoped for him. Illness is an expiation for sins; everything that afflicts a Muslim—be it fatigue, illness, worry, sorrow, harm, or grief, even a thorn—God expiates his sins through it. The extent to which illness expiates sins is known only to God. For one afflicted by a coma, prayer is waived, and there is no make-up required according to some scholars, such as Ibn Umar, Malik, and Al-Shafi'i.
