Is watching movies and TV series forbidden, even with averting one's gaze from unlawful scenes?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to watch TV series that contain forbidden musical instruments and music, unveiled women, or other reprehensible things. However, if the TV series are free from prohibitions and the promotion of deviant ideas and false beliefs, then there is no harm in watching them.
