What is the criterion of distinction adopted by the jurists in differentiating between wiping over the khuffs (leather socks) and wiping over the turban, where they deemed the ablution of one who removes what was wiped over from the khuffs to be invalidated, while the ablution of one who removes what was wiped over from the turbans is not invalidated?

Wiping over the turban is affirmed by the authentic Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet, and it is the madhhab (definition) of Imam Ahmad. It is considered one of the unique rulings of the Hanbali school. Those who permit wiping over the turban say that its ruling regarding the time limit, the condition of having performed ablution prior to wearing it, and the invalidation of ablution by removing it, is like the ruling of the khuff (leather socks). Among them are those who hold that removing the turban does not invalidate ablution, and this is the view of Ibn Hazm Al-Zahiri and the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.
