Is making up prayers an obligation or a recommendation?

Prayer with natural discharge is not valid due to the lack of the condition of purity. However, since this was due to ignorance, there is no need to make up the missed prayers, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not order the one who prayed incorrectly to make up what he missed due to his ignorance.
