Is the sudden heart palpitation that afflicts me when committing a sin a punishment from Allah? And do the verses apply to me: "So their faith did not profit them when they saw Our might. [This is] the established way of Allah which has passed concerning His servants; and the disbelievers then lost [all means of defense]" and "Do they await but that the angels should come to them or that your Lord should come or that some of the signs of your Lord should come? The Day some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or had earned through its faith some good. Say, 'Wait; indeed, We are waiting'"? Especially after I pledged to Allah to abandon this sin, then broke my pledge. And is my cessation from sins and my beginning of new acts of obedience an indication of the acceptance of my repentance?

The verses mentioned have no relation to the condition that afflicted the questioner. Rather, what befell her might be a warning from Allah for her to repent, and it is from His mercy, not His torment. Repentance is accepted as long as the soul is in the body, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah continues to accept the repentance of His servant as long as he has not gasped."

Allah's saying: "So their faith did not benefit them when they saw Our torment" (40:85) refers specifically to disbelievers upon witnessing the torment. And His saying: "Do they await but that the angels should come to them" (6:158) refers to the major signs of the Hour, such as the sun rising from the west, at which point faith will no longer be beneficial.

The palpitation she felt might be from Allah's mercy to remind her and call her to repentance, so she should not surrender to satanic whisperings. Allah's mercy is vast, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin. Whoever repents with sincere repentance before the soul reaches the throat, their repentance is accepted. Allah says: "Verily, repentance with Allah is only for those who do evil in ignorance and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness" (4:17). And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one who repents from sin is like the one who has no sin." So, she should strive in obedience, increase in supererogatory acts, and supplicate.
