The question

What is the ruling on wedding parties that are extremely loud, involve mixing of sexes with dancing and indecent clothing, and are held in the street, thus attracting strangers and drunkards? Is the sin for these (actions) upon the organizers of the party? What is the ruling on attending these parties and dancing in them? What if the groom is a brother? What if I am asked to host such a party? What is the ruling on flogging the back or chest at these parties?

The answer

It is not permissible to organize or attend wedding parties that include objectionable acts such as singing accompanied by musical instruments other than the duff (tambourine), or lewd dancing, or the mixing of men and women, except for someone who is capable of changing the objectionable act within them. If he cannot change it, he must leave. It is forbidden to attend such parties if one is unable to denounce the objectionable acts therein. It is not permissible to raise one's voice if it harms the neighbors, and the prohibition increases if the sound includes singing and music. Whoever causes these objectionable acts or brings drunkards to them bears their sin, like one who calls to misguidance. It is not permissible to answer a request to hold a party that includes objectionable acts. It is also not permissible to flog men at weddings due to the torture and harm it inflicts, and the transmission of diseases, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There shall be no harm or reciprocating of harm."
