Are clothes considered ritually impure for prayer if a police dog at the airport sniffs them without salivating on them, and is it permissible to pray in them out of necessity? Must all items in the bag be washed seven times? Is it permissible to carry religious books, tapes, and a Qur'an in a bag that might be inspected by dogs?

If discharge from a dog's nose gets on clothing, it becomes impure and must be washed. If its saliva or nasal discharge touches clothes and the questioner is unable to change them and fears the time for prayer will expire, she should pray and then repeat the prayer if she finds clean clothes. However, if nothing comes out of its nose, the clothes do not become impure merely by the dog sniffing them. There is no harm in traveling with a bag containing a Mus'haf (copy of the Qur'an) and religious books, unless it is known that they will be exposed to contact with dogs or searched by dogs, in which case the Mus'hafs and religious books should be removed from the bag.
