What is the ruling on a man borrowing money for the purpose of sending his parents for Umrah, knowing that he is already in debt and has not settled it due to financial hardship?

Filial piety is a great virtue, and it includes assisting one's parents in acts of obedience such as Hajj and Umrah, which are supererogatory deeds. Repaying debt is obligatory, and an obligation takes precedence over a supererogatory act. The matter of debt is grave, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "All sins of a martyr are forgiven except debt." If you have a debt and are unable to repay it due to financial hardship, it is not permissible for you to borrow money for your parents' Umrah; rather, your obligation is to repay your debt first.
