What is the cure for the disease of judging people, which causes hardness of heart?
Among the things that help in getting rid of this blameworthy disease is for the Muslim to recall that he is accountable and responsible before Allah for his actions, as Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow," and His saying: "On the Day when every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between it and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is full of kindness to the servants." He is not responsible for the crimes of others; rather, on the Day of Resurrection, the smallest sin he committed will appear greater in his eyes than the greatest sin committed by others. Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, peace be upon him) advised the disciples not to speak excessively without remembering Allah, lest their hearts harden, and not to look at people's sins as if they were lords, but rather to look at their own sins as if they were servants, and that people are of two types: those who are healthy and those who are afflicted. So, they should have mercy on those afflicted and praise Allah for good health. Thus, contemplating one's sins, personal faults, and shortcomings in deeds, recalling standing before Allah, and fearing the terror of the hereafter, are what help in avoiding this affliction.
