What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning a man who divorced his wife with a triple divorce in a state of anger, then returned to her?

If a man divorces his wife while in a state of extreme anger that deprived him of his awareness, then his divorce is not valid. However, if he did not lose his awareness, then his divorce is effective. If he pronounces the triple divorce, the fatwa states that his wife becomes irrevocably separated from him (baynunah kubra), and she is not permissible for him unless she marries another man, consummates the marriage with him, and then he divorces her or dies, and her 'iddah (waiting period) ends. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held the view that a triple divorce counts as a single divorce, so there is no blame upon anyone who follows him in this matter. It is advisable to present such issues to a Sharia court or to trusted scholars.
