What is the meaning of the the name "Rayhan"; is it "one whom Allah loves" or "a plant with a pleasant fragrance"?

"Rayhan" (basil) is an aromatic plant, and every such plant, or its tips and leaves, is called that. It is also used to refer to a child and sustenance. It is not known that "Rayhan" means "he whom Allah loves or favors." It is possible that whoever stated this meaning derived it mistakenly from Allah's saying: (Then [for him is] rest and rayhan [fragrant provision] and a Garden of pleasure) [Al-Waqi'ah: 89]. The verse means that rayhan is part of the recompense and reward for those brought near [to Allah], not the one brought near or favored himself. Ibn Kathir said in his exegesis of this verse: "For them is comfort and rayhan, and the angels will give them glad tidings of that at the time of death." Similarly, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn: "They are my two rayhan [fragrant flowers] from this world," meaning the rayhan that is smelled, as in the narration by Al-Tabarani: "I smell them." In summary, rayhan is the well-known plant, and there is no harm in naming males and females with it.
