What is the ruling on the validity of Hajj if a man has intercourse with his wife after the first tahallul (partial desacralization) and before Tawaf al-Ifadah (the circumambulation of overflowing) due to his ignorance?

If intercourse occurs after the first 'tahallul' (partial desacralization) and before the 'Tawaf al-Ifadah' (circumambulation of outpouring), the Hajj is not invalidated. However, a 'dam' (sacrifice of a sheep) is required from both spouses. They must also go to the 'hill' (area outside the Haram boundaries) to re-enter ihram and perform tawaf while in this state of ihram, because the ihram was invalidated by the intercourse. This is the view of the Hanbalis.

As for the Shafi'i madhhab, the Hajj remains valid, and there is no need to re-enter ihram; only a 'dam' (sacrifice of a sheep) is required from both spouses. If intercourse occurs after the Tawaf al-Ifadah, there is no consequence.
