Is it permissible to document a volunteer certificate in the academic record if the number of hours mentioned therein does not match the actual number of hours the student spent, and is that considered to be a form of tatfeef (shortchanging/giving less than due)?

The actual number of volunteer hours must be written on the certificate without exaggeration, in order to avoid lying. The student must refuse any falsification of the number of hours, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, truthfulness leads to righteousness, and indeed righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person ( Siddiq). Indeed, lying leads to wickedness, and indeed wickedness leads to the Hellfire. And a man keeps on lying until he is written with Allah as a liar." Also, "One who pretends to have been given what he has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood." If the student cannot influence the number of hours written by the granting institution, then there is no blame upon him for accepting the certificate, with the obligation to inform of the truth later if he benefits from the certificate in a job or otherwise.
