What should I do regarding my wife who observes prayer and helps me with acts of obedience, but refuses to give up makeup and perfumes and demands separation when reminded of it, considering my fear of Allah’s wrath due to not compelling her to wear a full hijab, and my fear of her reverting to her former ways if I divorce her, knowing that she supports her mother?
A man is responsible for his wife, and he must not permit her to leave the house perfumed or wearing makeup, as Allah the Almighty says: {Men are the protectors and maintainers of women}. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "And a man is a guardian over his household and he is responsible for them."
If she does not respond, he should admonish her, remind her of the obligation to obey her husband, and encourage her to associate with righteous women. If that does not work, then divorce is preferable, and there is no sin upon him regarding her circumstances after the divorce. However, if he keeps her under his care and permits her to leave in this forbidden manner, then he is sinful.
