The answer

Responding to the adhan is a sunnah (recommended act) according to the majority of scholars, and obligatory according to the Hanafis and the Dhahiris. It is not appropriate for anyone who hears it except to repeat what the mu'adhin (caller to prayer) says, even if they are in the middle of reciting the Quran. However, during prayer, the majority of scholars state that one should not repeat it, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, prayer is an occupation." The Malikis, however, permit repeating it in supererogatory (nafl) prayers but not in obligatory (fard) prayers. A worshipper who continues their prayer while hearing the adhan is not sinful, and it is recommended for them to lower their voice during recitation so as not to distract the mu'adhin.
