The answer

It is not permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram, and there is no difference in this regard between a long journey and a short one. Whatever is called travel, a woman is prohibited from undertaking it unless she is with a mahram, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A woman should not travel except with a mahram." If her travel is for seeking knowledge or for work, and the distance necessitates travel, she is not permitted to do so except with a mahram. She should strive to transfer her work or change her place of residence if she is in need. And if the means of seeking knowledge is forbidden, then that matter becomes forbidden, not for its essence but for something external to it.
