What was the life of the the Prophet's youth (peace be upon him) like?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was born in Mecca and grew up in the desert, then returned to Mecca under the care of his grandfather and uncle. He was known for his trustworthiness, truthfulness, and avoidance of frivolity and polytheism. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When I grew up, idols became hateful to me, and poetry became hateful to me. I never attempted anything that people in the Age of Ignorance used to do, except for two times, and each time Allah intervened between me and what I intended. After that, I never intended any evil until Allah honored me with His message." He participated in the Hilf al-Fudul (Pact of the Virtuous) and the rebuilding of the Kaaba, and married Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, when he was twenty-six years old. He worked as a shepherd and a merchant. Before reaching the age of forty, he grew fond of worshiping in the cave of Hira, until revelation came to him at the age of forty.
