Is it permissible for a sister suffering from cancer, sixty years of age, to appoint someone to perform Hajj on her behalf while she is still alive, or should the appointment be after her death, and if she recovers after appointing someone, is she obligated to perform Hajj herself?

It is permissible for a chronically ill person whose recovery is not hoped for, and who is financially able, to deputize someone else to perform the obligatory Hajj on their behalf. It is also permissible for someone else to perform it voluntarily on their behalf. However, if the illness is one from which recovery is hoped for, it is not permissible for him to deputize someone, and if he does, it will not suffice for the Hajj of Islam. If the patient for whom deputization was permissible recovers after Hajj was performed on his behalf, he must repeat Hajj for himself. And if he recovers before the deputy performs Hajj, the deputy's Hajj will not suffice for him, because he is now in the status of a healthy person.
