Is what is mentioned about rulings concerning women—such as the angels cursing her if she refuses her husband, or her not receiving reward if he has intercourse with her while she is unwilling, or the necessity for her to reconcile with her husband even if he has insulted her—truly from the Law of God? And is the reward for congregational prayer specific to men, to the exclusion of women?
Islam has honored women as daughters, mothers, and wives, elevating their status and prohibiting practices against them such as infanticide and others. Therefore, anyone who assumes that Islam has stripped women of their humanity has erred. This can be explained in seven points:
1. The angels do not curse a wife who refuses her husband's bed unless she has no valid excuse, such as being sick, menstruating, in postpartum bleeding (nifas), or observing an obligatory fast.
2. It is forbidden for a husband to harm his wife by denying her right to intercourse and intimacy; otherwise, he is sinful.
3. The wife is rewarded for intercourse because she is the sister of the man in rulings and rewards, and whoever is a cause for the husband's reward shares in it.
4. The angels' cursing of the wife for refusing intimacy occurs when the husband goes to bed angry. A husband's humiliation of his wife is a sin, and she has the right to defend herself or to be patient and seek reward from Allah.
5. A woman may review her husband's opinion and disagree with him, as long as he does not order her to commit a sin, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator."
6. The reward for congregational prayer, twenty-seven degrees, is specific to men, but a woman may attend prayer in the mosque, though their homes are better for them.
7. Allah does not differentiate in reward between men and women for righteous deeds. Allah Almighty says: "Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do." (An-Nahl: 97).
