What is the status of women in Islam with regard to work, what did the Messenger, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, say during the Farewell Pilgrimage concerning women's work, and what are the duties required of them, with an explanation?
The status and role of women have been detailed in previous fatwas.
An-Nasa’i, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and others narrated the sermon of the Farewell Pilgrimage with some variations in wording, the origin of which is in the Two Sahihs. It includes an exhortation to treat women kindly, and a clarification that they have rights and duties. It also states: “Behold, no one commits an offense except against himself, and a father does not commit an offense against his son, nor a son against his father,” and “Indeed, Satan has despaired of being worshipped besides Allah the Almighty,” but he will be obeyed “in what you deem insignificant of your deeds.”
Imam An-Nawawi and others explained the hadith: The “Farewell Pilgrimage” was named so because of his farewell to the people or the Haram therein. “Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honor are sacred” means forbidden and prohibited. “Jinaayah” (offense) means sin and crime, and no one is held accountable for another's offense. “Al-‘Awaan” means captive. “Al-Fahishah Al-Mubayyinah” (manifest indecency) refers to nushuz (disobedience/rebellion) and bad cohabitation. “Ghair al-mubarrih” (non-bruising) striking means not causing injury or severe pain. “La yuti’na furushakum man takrahoon” (they should not allow anyone you dislike onto your beds) means they should not permit anyone to enter their husbands' homes.
