The one who dug the grave of the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, was Abu Talhah Zayd ibn Sahl al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, as mentioned by biographers and commentators on . Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that there was a man in Medina who dug lahd (side-niche) graves and another who dug shiq (straight-cut) graves. So, a choice was sought from Allah, and messengers were sent to both of them. The lahd grave digger (Abu Talhah) arrived first, and thus they dug a lahd grave for the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him. Al-Tabarani narrated from al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah that he was among those who dug the grave of the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, and dug a lahd for him.
