I vowed to slaughter a male animal, so can I slaughter a female animal instead?

Whoever makes a vow of obedience to Allah must fulfill what they have vowed, and they must adhere to the description they stipulated in the vow. However, it is permissible for them to switch to what is better. So, whoever vows a male animal must slaughter a male animal, and it is not permissible for them to slaughter a female, because a male is better than a female.
