Is it permissible to slaughter a female sheep?

Allah the Exalted has permitted the slaughter of livestock, both male and female. The male is preferred for sacrifice (Udhiyah) and similar acts. Maliki jurists have mentioned a prohibition against slaughtering a lactating animal for the sake of public interest.
