Summary of the Story:

Ja'far ibn Abi Talib was the spokesman for the Muslims before the Negus. He described to him their state before Islam, explaining that they were people of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) who worshipped idols and committed immoral acts. Then, he clarified how Allah sent to them a messenger from among themselves, calling them to monotheism and abandoning idol worship, enjoining them to speak truthfully, fulfill trusts, and treat neighbors well, and forbidding them from immoral acts. Ja'far mentioned the Islamic principles they followed and how their people tortured them, wishing them to abandon their religion, so they sought refuge with the Negus, asking for his protection. The Negus asked Ja'far to recite something of what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had brought. Ja'far then recited the beginning of Surah Maryam. The Negus and his bishops wept, deeply moved, and the Negus said: "Indeed, this and what Moses brought come from the same niche." This indicated that their weeping was due to the meaning and the consistency of the verses with their own scriptures.
