Is it permissible for the wife to name her daughter with a different name and reject the name chosen by her husband?
Naming the newborn is the father's right, and the mother should be consulted, choosing a name acceptable to both. If they dispute, the right belongs to the father. Ibn al-Qayyim said that naming is the right of the father, not the mother, and that the hadiths indicate this, for the child is called after his father, not his mother. Allah says: (Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah). The child follows his father in lineage, and naming is a definition of lineage. Sheikh Bakr Abu Zayd stated that the mother should not contend or dispute, and that consultation between the parents is a means of reconciliation and affection. There is no harm if the mother calls her daughter by another name, as long as the intention is not to abandon the name given to her by her father or to object to it. The advice to the wife is to fear Allah and be content with the name her husband chose, as long as the right is his according to Islamic law, and the name is permissible, common, and has nothing objectionable about it.
