What is the ruling on teaching the French language?

It is permissible to learn and teach foreign languages such as French, and it may become a communal obligation (fard kifaya) if certain interests depend on it. However, it must not divert one from learning the language of the Quran. Learning it is permissible for a religious or worldly need, and it is disliked without such a need. It is necessary for da'wah (inviting to Islam) and coexisting with the world, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded Zayd ibn Thabit to learn the writing of the Jews.
