What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding respecting one's parents?

Children's respect for parents is an obligation enjoined by Allah in His Book and through the words of His Messenger, and it is something known to be an essential part of the religion, as Allah Almighty says: [And your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.] As for parents' respect for their children, Allah has ingrained in parents compassion and love for their children. The Quran did not enjoin parents regarding their children in the same way it enjoined children regarding their parents. The most important manifestations of parents' respect for their children are their good upbringing and teaching them the principles of their religion and obedience to Allah, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and beat them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds." And among good treatment is justice between them, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fear Allah and be just among your children." As for neglecting their upbringing and providing them with everything they desire, this is not respect, but rather a squandering of the trust.
