Why did Abdullah ibn Mas'ud not participate in the compilation of the Mushaf, despite the hadith, "Whoever wishes to recite the Qur’an freshly as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd," and his saying, "By Him besides Whom there is no other god, no verse has been revealed in the Book of Allah except that I know concerning what it was revealed and where it was revealed. And if I knew of anyone more knowledgeable than me concerning the Book of Allah, whom camels could reach, I would go to him," and due to his recitation being considered among the irregular recitations?

The Hadith: "Whoever wishes to recite the Qur'an fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd" is authentic. The apparent contradiction between the authenticity of the Hadith and the fact that the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud is considered one of the anomalous recitations is resolved by understanding that the meaning of the Hadith is the Prophet's (peace be upon him) encouragement to recite the Qur'an with the same measured pace and clear articulation as Ibn Mas'ud used, not to adopt the exact wording of his recitation that might differ from the Uthmanic Mushaf. It is possible that the Prophet (peace be upon him) intended his recitation in the parts that did not contradict the Mushaf. However, if his recitation differed, it should not be adopted, because it falls outside the consensus and is transmitted through solitary narrations. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud did not participate in the transcription of the Mushaf because he was in Kufa at the time the Musahif were transcribed in Medina.
