How accurate is the story of Uthman ibn Affan expelling Ibn Mas'ud from the mosque after his dismissal from the governorship of Kufa?

The mentioned story in this form has not been verified. However, a disagreement did occur between Uthman and Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them both, because Uthman tasked Zayd ibn Thabit with compiling the Mushaf, as Ibn Mas'ud believed himself to be more deserving of this task. Al-Dhahabi mentioned that the reason for not putting Ibn Mas'ud forward was his absence in Kufa, and that Zayd was a scribe of revelation and an imam in orthography, and Abu Bakr had previously appointed him to compile the Qur'an. Ibn Mas'ud was content and followed Uthman before his death.
