Doubt concerning divorce does not remove the certainty of the marital bond, and this is a matter upon which there is a consensus among scholars. The principle is that "everything subject to doubt is disregarded in Islamic law." If one doubts a divorce, it does not lead to the cessation of the marital bond. Nevertheless, it is more scrupulous for a person to be cautious for himself by pronouncing a clear divorce, and then taking her back if it is not the third divorce. This is "to clear one's conscience" and to ensure that the woman becomes lawfully permissible for other men if he does not take her back.
