Is "Al-Haqq" (The Truth/The Reality) one of the attributes of Allah, Almighty and Exalted?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Regarding the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, "Allah created the creation, and when He finished, the womb stood up and took hold of the Haqw (waist-wrapper/hip) of Ar-Rahman…", there are two views concerning the term "Haqw":

1. It is one of the hadiths concerning the Divine Attributes (Sifat), and the attribution of "Haqw" to Allah Almighty is the attribution of an attribute to the One described. Thus, "Haqw" is affirmed as an attribute of the Essence (Dhat), and this is the view of some scholars.

2. It is not one of the hadiths concerning the Divine Attributes, but rather it is a metonymy (kinayah) for emphasizing the right of kinship and exalting its status, given that it was not mentioned in books of creed, and its similarity to other hadiths that emphasize the importance of maintaining kinship ties, such as "Indeed, the womb is a branch from Ar-Rahman."

Some scholars have indicated that this hadith is from among the Mutashabih (ambiguous texts) whose knowledge is entrusted to Allah Almighty, or that it is a metonymy, while emphasizing the methodology of Ahl as-Sunnah in accepting hadiths concerning the Divine Attributes as they came, without تأويل (figurative interpretation) or تكييف (speculating on their modality).

Based on this, "Haqw" is an attribute of Allah, the Exalted, that is inseparable from Him.
