Who was the Amir (leader/governor) of Medina during the Battle of Tabuk: was it Muhammad ibn Maslamah or Ali ibn Abi Talib?

The governor of Medina whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, appointed over it during the Battle of Tabuk was Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, according to the preponderant opinion. This is based on what is narrated in the Sahihayn (Bukhari and Muslim) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Are you not pleased to be to me as Aaron was to Moses, except that there will be no prophet after me?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left him as a governor over those who remained in Medina, including women and children. This opinion was favored by Ibn Abd al-Barr and others, despite the existence of other opinions that prefer other names.
