Does a triple divorce take effect if the wife does not return by Friday?

If the wife does not return home by the end of Friday, a triple divorce (Talaq al-thalaath) occurs, and she becomes irrevocably divorced (baynunah kubra) according to the majority of scholars. However, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that a conditional divorce (talaq mu'allaq) that is not intended to effect divorce but rather for threat or emphasis is considered an oath (yameen), and an expiation for an oath (kaffarat yameen) is required. If divorce is intended, then the pronouncement of "triple" counts as a single divorce. But if the wife returns on Friday, no divorce occurs, and no expiation is required.
