What is required of one who could not differentiate between menstrual blood and abnormal bleeding, and did not make up any prayers or fasts for what she considered menstruation, in addition to her eating in Ramadan?
The difference between menstruation (hayd) and irregular bleeding (istihadah) has been previously explained. Menstruation necessitates abstaining from prayer and fasting. Fasting must be made up, but prayer does not. As for the woman experiencing irregular bleeding, she is considered pure, and it is not permissible for her to abandon prayer or fasting. If she does so out of ignorance, she must make up both the fasts and the prayers.
Fasts missed in Ramadan due to menstruation must be made up. As for fasts missed without a valid excuse, such as irregular bleeding, repentance and making them up are required. There is no expiation (kaffarah) for delaying the making up of fasts if the ignorance was concerning the impermissibility of the delay itself.
Missed prayers must be made up, except for those that occurred during menstruation. One must strive to ascertain the number of missed days and hasten to make them up.
Regarding eating and drinking during Ramadan in an age where there is doubt as to whether it was after puberty or before, one's conscience is clear from making up these days.
