Is it permissible to wipe over a bandage affixed to a wound on the top of the foot without wiping over the affected sole, and is this sufficient for ablution (wudu'), or is tayammum (dry ablution) necessary?

Scholars have differed on the sufficient amount for wiping over a splint (jabeera) into three opinions:

1. First: The obligation to wipe over the entire splint. This is the view of the Malikis, the soundest of the two opinions among the Shafi'is, and the well-known position among the Hanbalis, because it is a substitute for washing the limb, which must be fully covered. 2. Second: Wiping over most of it. This is the view of the Hanafis, considering the majority to be equivalent to the whole. 3. Third: Sufficiency with wiping over part of it. This is the opinion of some Shafi'is.

The most preponderant view is that it is obligatory to wipe over the entire splint if possible. If it is not possible to wipe over its lower part due to harm, then wiping over its upper part suffices, based on the Almighty's saying: (So fear Allah as much as you are able).
