The answer

The interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "Have you not seen how your Lord extends the shadow? And if He willed, He could have made it stationary. Then We made the sun an indication thereof. Then We قبضناه to Us قبضاً يسيراً (a gentle قبض)" (Al-Furqan: 45-46) is that the extension of the shadow occurs from dawn until sunrise. If Allah willed, He could have made it stationary, never to disappear. Then He made the sun an indication of the shadow, for things are known by their opposites. And "قبضاً يسيراً" means quickly or subtly, for the shadow is gradually retracted as darkness falls.

The scientific miracle in the verse points to the Earth's rotation, for if the Earth were stationary, the shadow would remain constant in length. The verse also indicates the role of sunlight as an indicator of the shadow, the variation in light permeability, and the apparent change in the sun's position due to the Earth's rotation, which leads to the gradual, rather than instantaneous, retraction of the shadow.
