What is the ruling regarding a wife remaining with a husband who constantly quarrels, does not work, does not pray regularly, lies, and whom the wife despises to the extent that she cannot bear to look at him, knowing that she fears displeasing her Lord?
The foundation of married life is affection, mercy, and respect. If these are lost, and the spouses can no longer tolerate each other, then divorce is better. The wife is permitted to seek divorce or khul’ (divorce at the instance of the wife) if she dislikes her husband, or if he does not pray and lies frequently, or if he is unable to provide for her. However, if the wife has no shelter or provider, she must be patient and supplicate, for what has befallen her was decreed, and there may be a good in it that she does not know.
