What is the first thing to be lifted from this nation, is it humility or trustworthiness?

Reports have been transmitted stating that the first thing to be lifted [from people] is humility (khushūʿ), including narrations attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from Abu ad-Darda, Abu Hurairah, Anas, and Shaddad ibn Aws, but their chains of transmission are not without weakness.

However, it is authentically reported from Shaddad ibn Aws, as his own statement (mawquf): "The first thing to be lifted from people is humility (khushūʿ)." This is considered to be in the حكم المرفوع (having the ruling of a prophetic narration) because it is a report about the unseen.

Other narrations have been transmitted stating that the first thing to be lifted is trustworthiness (al-amanah (definition)), from Umar ibn al-Khattab, Abu Hurairah, Aisha, Anas, and Shaddad ibn Aws, but these too are not without weakness. The strongest report in this regard is the statement attributed to Ibn Mas'ud (mawquf): "The first thing you will lose from your religion is trustworthiness (al-amanah)."

It is possible to reconcile these two statements by understanding that humility (khushūʿ) is the first inner knowledge (علم قلبي) to be lifted, followed by the lifting of trustworthiness (al-amanah) as the first action and character trait (عمل وخُلق). This is because the absence of humility leads the servant to audacity in injustices and the failure to uphold trusts.
