Slander (Qadhf) in Islamic law is when a sane, free, Muslim individual accuses someone of denying paternity or of committing adultery. It is a grave major sin because it violates the honor of the slandered person. Its punishment in this world is eighty lashes, whether for spouses or others, unless the accuser produces clear evidence. If the accuser has no evidence and is a spouse, the punishment is averted through li'an (oath of condemnation).
