Is it considered disobedience to parents (ʿuqūq) if one refrains from kissing his disbelieving mother, avoids shaking her hand, does not sit with her frequently, and rejects her accusations of disobedience, even though he obeys her commands and fulfills her needs?

Abandoning prayer, cursing religion, and mocking it are among the gravest sins and ugliest acts. Cursing religion and mocking it constitute apostasy, but one should not rush to rule a mother an apostate, for the ruling on disbelief is a matter for judges and scholars. As for abandoning prayer, it is one of the most heinous sins. Whoever denies its obligation disbelieves by the consensus of Muslims. As for one who abandons it out of laziness while acknowledging its obligation, a group of scholars have ruled them a disbeliever, while the majority of scholars say that they are a sinner of the worst kind but not a disbeliever.

Assuming the mother commits acts that necessitate apostasy, it is obligatory for you to honor her and treat her kindly, and not to obey her in matters that displease Allah. Your mother, by her committing of evil deeds, is in great danger, and she is the most deserving of your call and advice out of compassion and mercy. Exert every possible effort in advising her; if she responds, then praise be to Allah, and if she does not, then you have discharged your responsibility.

You are not sinful for any dislike you may feel in your heart towards her, and you must obey her in what you are able to do, as long as it benefits her and does not harm you. Changing your sleep schedule to help her is a good act. You are not sinful if she becomes angry with you despite your fulfilling what you can of filial piety. Not kissing her, shaking her hand, and sitting with her, if it bothers and hurts her, is feared to be an act of disobedience (to parents), so you must do what pleases her. Obeying her in matters like putting away clothes and similar things should be done as long as you are not harmed by it, for there is good in obeying the mother in what does not involve disobedience to Allah.
