What is the authenticity and meaning of the Hadith: "Daughters are good deeds (hasanat), and sons are blessings (ni'am), and one is rewarded for good deeds, while one will be questioned about blessings"?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions did not state the saying: "Daughters are good deeds (hasanat) and sons are blessings (ni'am)." Rather, some scholars mention it as coming from some of the early Muslims (Salaf), such as Ja'far ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn Sulaiman. The Shiites attribute this saying to Ja'far ibn Muhammad, but what they mention is not to be used as a proof. Both sons and daughters are blessings from Allah, and Allah bestows upon whom He wills females and males. It may be that the intended meaning is that the blessing in sons is more complete. There are narrations that favor raising daughters and consider it a shield from Hellfire, and the preference is not based on gender but on righteousness, for both can be a good deed and a blessing by Allah's grace.
