What is the ruling on a man wearing gold for purposes other than adornment—such as a writing pen that is a gift—with mention of the evidence?

It is forbidden for a man to use a pen, eyeglasses, or anything else made of gold, whether he acquired it by purchase or as a gift, because Allah has prohibited everything that leads to extravagance, vanity, and breaking the hearts of the poor. Indeed, it has been forbidden to drink and eat from vessels of gold and silver, and for men to wear gold rings. Gold and silk have been permitted for the women of the Ummah and forbidden for their men. The majority of scholars have appended to these proofs the prohibition of all forms of use, except what the Shariah has specifically allowed, such as jewelry for women and silver rings for men, or what is for a necessity, such as a gold patch for a cup or a gold tooth filling.
