What is the ruling on the statement that the mention of the verse, "And We gave him tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous" [37:112], after the story of Prophet Abraham with Prophet Ishmael in Surat As-Saffat, indicates that Ishmael is older than Isaac, and are there any implications stemming from this statement?

The one to be sacrificed was Ishmael (peace be upon him). Scholars have deduced this from the context of the story of the sacrifice in the Holy Quran, where the glad tidings of Ishmael are mentioned, followed by the story of the sacrifice and his ransom, and then the glad tid tidings of Isaac thereafter. This indicates that the one to be sacrificed was Ishmael. Ibn Kathir also affirmed that the claim that Isaac was the one to be sacrificed originated from the scribes of the People of the Book and has no basis in the Quran or Sunnah. Furthermore, Ishmael was the firstborn of Abraham and older than Isaac, by agreement of both Muslims and the People of the Book.

It is not permissible to speak about the Book of Allah without knowledge. Whoever speaks about it without knowledge has erred, even if he happens to be correct in meaning, because he did not follow the proper path.

The pen is lifted from the child until he reaches puberty, meaning he is not held accountable. If your previous belief that Isaac was the one to be sacrificed occurred before the age of accountability, there is no blame upon you now that you have learned the correct information.
