Is the husband obligated to help his wife with household chores, and what is the evidence for that?

The jurists differed regarding the obligation of a wife to serve her husband. Those who said it is not obligatory made it incumbent upon the husband to provide a servant for his wife if she does not serve herself. They further differed whether the husband should perform the service himself. The predominant view is that a wife's service to her husband is obligatory.

Nevertheless, a husband's assistance to his wife in household chores is among the noble morals encouraged by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Indeed, the Prophet used to serve his family. This humility helps foster affection and mercy between spouses and purifies the soul from arrogance and tyranny.
